Hi, I’m Elizabeth Stuart, MD

A psychoanalyst and psychiatrist in Oakland, CA

Therapy offers space to explore your inner world—and find your way forward.

Therapy isn’t just about solving problems

it’s about being met in a way that allows you to discover yourself.

A Space for Deep Listening, Exploration, and Change

True change doesn’t happen through willpower alone; it happens through understanding—not just intellectually, but in the way you experience yourself, your emotions, and others.

Some people come to therapy feeling stuck in painful emotional patterns. Others have tried different approaches—finding relief, but not quite the deeper shift they were hoping for.

My work is rooted in depth, curiosity, and a profound respect for what unfolds in the therapy process.

No matter where you’re starting from, therapy offers the possibility of something more—a space where you can listen to yourself differently, unravel what’s been holding you back, and step into a way of being that feels more alive, connected, and true to who you are.

What It’s Like to Work Together

In our work together, I listen closely—not just to your words, but to what lives underneath. Together, we’ll begin to make sense of emotional patterns, internal conflicts, and long-standing dynamics that may be keeping you stuck. As these begin to come into focus, the therapy itself becomes a space for something new to emerge.

Change happens not by force, but by being deeply understood.

So much of what shapes us lives outside of conscious awareness. In psychoanalytic work, these patterns don’t just get talked about—they show up in the room, in the relationship, in real time. By noticing what arises together, we create the possibility for not just insight, but transformation—change that’s felt, lived, and lasting.

What I Bring to This Work

At the heart of my practice is a deep respect for your inner world. I offer a thoughtful, attuned presence—someone who listens with care, curiosity, and an eye toward what’s not yet been said. I approach our work together as a relationship: one where emotional safety, honesty, and connection make it possible for real change to unfold.

My work is grounded in decades of experience, but led by compassion.

Before becoming a psychoanalyst in private practice, I spent over 20 years working across a range of settings—from hospitals to community clinics to academic institutions. That background gives me a wide lens and a strong foundation, but what guides me most is the belief that healing happens in relationship: through being seen, understood, and met with genuine care. Whether we’re exploring your emotional world, considering medication, or both, my approach remains the same—deeply collaborative and centered around you.
